Martha (Elizabeth Taylor) is a
character from Edward Albee's famous
absurd drama Who's Afraid of Virginia
Woolf (1962). She is the daughter of the
rector of local university living with her
husband George (Richard Burton) who teaches in the Department of History. They are a middle-aged
couple who know each other very well. They are going through a sentimental crisis which affects negatively
their frustrated childless marriage.
One day, after a party, they invite a young couple, Nick and Honey, at home to have a drink. As the
private party continues, Martha and George insult each other in front of their guests. They also amuse
themselves by playing mischievous games and singing a song "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" which is an
allusion to a popular song "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Woolf" which originally featured in a Walt Disney's
cartoon Three Little Pigs (1933)."
