Review of the film "When the trees Fall" (2018)

The growth of Ukrainian cinema, its level and popularity, and targeted support from the state can be called one of the largest achievements in the development of culture in recent years. It is also possible to note the success of the creators in a variety of genres - from comedies to dramatic films. A striking example of the latter direction is the film by Marysia Nikityuk, who directed and wrote the script for this film "When trees fall".

The film tells the love story of young Larisa and the "guy from the brigade" (the format of the "dashing 90s" years) "Scar", their difficult choice. The young girl is condemned for her undisguised passion and the "object of love" by her fellow villagers, but her friends and her cousin, a five-year-old Branch, fully support her. Fate breeds loved ones, their feelings are overshadowed.

"When Trees Fall" is a film for which the story of two young people is both a story of passion and an attempt to make an anatomy of a conservative Ukrainian village and small towns. In general, these are attempts to analyze economic factors when young people cannot realize themselves in this atmosphere, when a trip to the sea is often the limit of their dreams, or when guys associate themselves with crime.

"When the Trees Fall" is also the story of teenage uncompromising maximalism, depicted by an impressive visual picture, which was embodied by the outstanding Polish cinematographer of our time Michal Englert. The camerawork is bold, she controls every moment of the tape. The author boldly uses explicit erotic scenes, but here they are not a means of shocking. It can be noted that realism here is intertwined with figurative symbolic inserts, which somewhat smooth out the "bitter pill" of a sense of reality. The authors also raised the urgent problem of the coexistence of people and Roma in Ukrainian society.... It is possible to note the monolithic plot of "without water", which looks both dramatic and intriguing.

It is possible to note the integral play of the actors of both the first and second plan, each here adds its own zest. The director herself, as she noted at the press conference, allowed improvisation. Regarding the performers of the main characters - yes, these are young people who could not find themselves in an era of change. The main character Larisa, played by Anastasia Pustovit, is torn between an uncertain future, after the death of her father, and love for a member of the "brigade" of a young Scar guy, played by Maxim Samchik. The latter still dreams of finding a better fate, but he is brought back again and again by fatal twists of fate...

By the way, the film became a nominee of the Berlin International Film Festival, and it turned out to be really interesting, lively, but still too contrastingly realistic. It can be recommended for a wide range of adult viewers. https://22bet-casino.cz/
