“Winter
According to the calendar, winter comes on December 21, but in fact it often begins earlier. 21th December is called the day of winter equinox. The night is longest in the year.
Typical winter weather brings snowfalls, icy wind and hard frosts. But nowadays we miss real winter more and more, sometimes there is only little of snow
The temperatures sometimes drop below the freezing point. The roads become icy and slippery and it is very dangerous to go by car. Sometimes the wind creates snowdrifts along the road and snow ploughs must clear the roads. Finally the frost lets tip and the thaw sets in, the snow melt and paths are full of mud and slush.
Children enjoy their winter pleasures, such as throwing snowballs, building snowman, sledging, sliding and skating on lakes and streams that are frozen over. We must cut holes to let fish breathe. We wear warm clothes, caps and gloves.

The weather in Great Britain
The weather in Britain is slightly milder than the weather in the Czech Republic. This is partly because Britain is surrounded by water. In Britain they also have four distinct seasons. The winters have more snow than we do here but it isn't so cold. In spring it rains a lot but there are also sunny days. In autumn there is also quite a bit of rain and cool days. In Britain the days during summer are slightly longer than they are here and the days in winter are slightly shorter. On average the Czech Republic has more days with sunshine than in Britain.

The weather in USA
West coast of USA has warm climate and the most of year is sunny. The coast is influenced by the Pacific Ocean climate. East coast has moderate climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean.

Natural disasters
Fortunately in my country there aren´t many natural disasters: no earthquakes, no tidal waves and no hurricanes. But every spring some areas are flooded but it is very rarely a serious danger. Sometimes there is a very strong wind or gale, torrential rains and large areas of forests are destroyed. Anyway it is safer to have a lighting conductor on your house because there are often storms. In winter and spring there is a danger of avalanches in the mountains.
In other parts of the world there are many disasters. In the USA frequent tornadoes and earthquakes, near the Indian Ocean tsunami and in some countries eruption volcanoes and lava, drought and famine in Africa can appear.

• flood - soil and vegetation can´t absorb all the water from the rainfall; water runs off the land in huge quantities that can´t be contained in streams and reservoirs
• hurricane - a violent storm that originates over the tropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean
• volcanic eruption - ejection of fast moving, hot flows of materials, ash and lava
• blizzard - a severe storm characterized by extreme cold, strong winds, and a heavy snowfall
• avalanche - a sudden flow of a large mass of snow or ice down a slope or cliff
• drought - a condition of abnormally dry weather
• earthquake - the shaking of the Earth ¨s surface caused by rapid movement of the Eart´s rocky layers
• tsunami - a seismic sea wave that can cause catastrophic damage
• wild fire - an outbreak of fire in a forest or wood
• cyclone - an area of low atmospheric pressure surrounded by a wind system blowing
Weather changes
Human activities have produced unplanned effects on weather and climate. Adding gases such as carbon dioxide and methane to the atmosphere has increased the greenhouse effect and contributed to global warming by raising the mean temperature of the earth. Global warming may cause the sea level rise; ozone hole can cause skin cancer

NATIONAL HOLIDAYS IN THE USA

There aren’t national holidays in the USA. Each state has the right to decode about its own holidays. In practice, however, most states observe the federal public holidays (Martin Luther King’s Day, The Presidents’ day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving)
Americans celebrate an enormous variety of festivals and holidays because they come from all over the world and practice many religious. These ethnic groups have brought their own customs and traditions which may be quite different. Their customs differ especially about the holidays which were originally connected with religious feasts, such as Easter or Christmas.
There are 10 federal or national holidays in the US. These are designated by the federal government, but each state can decide if they want to honor them, or have different ones.
In the US, most federal holidays don’t have specific dates, but are celebrated on a certain day. That way, states and companies who celebrate it will have a long weekend.
