“Since very long time ago Prague has been a crucial political and social centre. Prague historical centre was in 1992 put on the UNESCO world cultural heritage list. It belongs to nine towns and cities to which the European Communities awarded the title „European Cultural Capital 2000“
A number of famous people were born in Prgue and lived and worked there as well. Prague is a populat venue of many important international festivals, conferences and trade fairs.
Prague is an important transport junction where railways from all directions meet. The is an airport Ruzyně too. There is a net of buses and trams and prague has also had underground since 1974.
The historical centre is made up of the Old Town, Josefov, the Lesser Quarter, Hradčany, the New Town and Vyšehrad.
The most visited tourist sights include:
Prague Castle, which is the largest building in Prague. It was founded by the first Premyslid Prince Bořivoj. It is a block of palaces, secular and religious buildings, fortresses and houses from all periods of history. In the past centuries, it was the seat of Czech princes and kings and since 1918 it has been the seat of the president. The jewel of this place is St. Vitus Cathedral. Apart form valuable artistic relies, St. Wenceslas Chapel and the tombs of Czech kings underground, the places houses the crowning jewels of Czech kings.
The Old Town Square is the centre of the Old Town and dates back to the 12th century. The square is surrounded with a lot houses built in different styles of architecture, the Old Town hall with an astronomical clock by Master Hanuš is the most famous one. There is also the Monument to Master Jan Hus and the baroque St. Nicholaus Church.
Vyšehrad is the oldest seat of the first members of the premyslid Dynasty. Nowadays we can visit the National Cemetary here with the graves of outstanding personalities in the sphere of culture, science and politics. There is also Gothic St. Peter and Paul Church.
Charles Bridge is the most famous of the fifteen Prague bridges. It was built by Charles 4. in gothic style in 14th century. It’s decorate by Baroque statues. The bridge gradually become one of the lively centres of Prague life. During summer it is always full of tourists, souvenir stalls and street artists."
