"The Czech Republic is situated in the middle of Europe. It is said that it lies in the heart of Europe. It borders with Germany in the West, with Poland in the North, with Slovakia in the East and with Austria in the South. The shortest border is with Slovakia and the longest one with Germany. It has three historical parts: Bohemia, Silesia and Moravia. It covers an area about 80,000 square km.
Our country’s borders are natural. They are formed by the Šumava mountains , the Ore mountains , the Luž mountains, the Jizera mountains, , the Giant mountains, the Eagle mountains, the Hrubý Jeseník , the Moravian-Silesian Beskids and the Carpathians in the North-East. The highest peak is Sněžka in the Giant mountains, which is 1 602 meters high. There are highlands and lowlands too. Bohemia is separated from Moravia by the Bohemian – Moravian Highlands. The lowest point is the abyss Macocha in the Moravian Karst.
The longest river is Vltava with 433km. Water from the Czech Republic flows into three different seas: the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. The others very important rivers are: The Elbe River, the Oder River, the Dyje River and the Morava River. The main European watershed is situated in the Czech Republic. It´s Kralický Sněžník in the North. On big rivers there were built dams as the Orlík Dam which is situated in the Vltava River. The biggest natural lake is the Black Lake in the Šumava Mountains. South Bohemia is known for ponds. These are: Rožmberk or Svět.
The Czech Republic has a temperate continental climate with hot summers and cold and snowy winters. The warmest area is the South Moravia and on the other side the coldest place is in the Giant Mountains.
In the Czech Republic there live about 10,3 million people. Most of them are Czech origin, so we can say, that Czech Republic is one nation state. There live some minorities too. These are: the Slovaks, the Gypsies, the Poles, the Germans, the Ukrainians and the Russians. The biggest city is Prague with 1,2 million people. It is the capital city too. The other big cities are Brno, Ostrava and Plzeň for example.
The head of state is the President. He is elected every 5 years by the Parliament. The first president of the Czech Republic was Václav Havel. At present it is Miloš Zeman. Power is divided into three branches – legislative, executive and judicial one.
The legislative branch is made up of Parliament. It consists of 2 chambers: the lower, which is called the Chamber of Deputies and the upper – it´s Senate.
The judicial branch is made up independent courts.
The executive is represented by the President and the government consisting of the prime minister and others ministers.
The flag has three colours- red, blue and white. Red and white are colours typical for the Slavs and blue one symbolise the Slovaks.
In the emblem of the Czech Republic there are 2 lions and 2 eagles. The silver lions are the emblem of Bohemia, the red and white eagle is the emblem of Moravia and the black eagle is the emblem of Silesia."
