Geography, nature: Despite its vast size, Australia is mostly flat. There are only two bigger mountains – Macdonnell Ranges in the outback (inland) and Great Dividing Range along Australia’s eastern coast (The Australian Alps). The highest mountain is Mt. Kosciuszko (2,228 m). It also is dotted with isolated, heavily eroded masses of rock that stand above the lowland. Ayers Rock (Uluru) is best-known one of these massive rocks. It’s sacred to the Aborigines, who were the first people to settle Australia. Australia's climate is quite different from the rest of the world. It is the driest inhabited continent on Earth, and the centre of the country has one of the lowest rainfall rates in the world. About three−quarters of the country can be described as arid or semi−arid. In central Australia, there are three deserts - the Great Sandy Desert, the Gibson Desert and the Great Victoria Desert."
