„British system of education
School attendance is compulsory from the age from5 to 16. Children attend state schools, but there are also independent (private) schools, where they must pay high tuition fees. The school year begins in early September and ends in the following July. The year is divided into three terms of around 13 weeks each.
Pre-schools (2-5 years old): play-schools – mostly play with, nursery schools – some early learning, learning words.
Primary schools (5/6–12/13): infant schools (5-7) – basic reading, writing, junior schools (7-11) – the work is more systematic.
Secondary schools (12/13-16/18): comprehensive – wide range of subjects, grammar school – in arts and sciences and technical areas, prepares for university, secondary modern school – more general education; GCSE = General Certificate of Secondary Education. Further/higher schools (18+): Six-form college – provide academic and non-academic education beyond the GCSE, Tertiary college – you can study part time or full time, you are preparedfor university or practical life
O – ordinary level: at 16, compulsory for secondary schools
A – advanced level: at 18, is taken after two years of study in two or three subjects
Advanced suplementary: to broaden their range of study
General National Vocational Qualification: provide pupils with an alternativeto the more traditional GCEs and A levels
Public schools: Eton, Winchester, Rugby, Westminster
Universities: Oxford, Cambridge, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh“
